How to Hang a Canvas Print

Hanging a canvas takes about ten minutes and a few basic tools. Follow these steps for a straight, secure result.

What you need

A pencil, a measuring tape, a level, and a hook or nail rated for the weight of your canvas. For drywall, use a wall anchor if you cannot hit a stud.

Step 1: Pick the height

Hang the center of the canvas at about 57 inches from the floor. Over a sofa or desk, leave about 6 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the art.

Step 2: Mark the spot

Measure the distance from the top of the canvas to the hanging wire or bracket, then mark that distance below your target top edge. Use the level to keep your mark straight.

Step 3: Install the hook and hang

Install the hook at your mark, hang the canvas, and check it with the level. Adjust until it sits flat against the wall.

Hanging several canvases together

Lay the canvases on the floor first and arrange them with 2 to 3 inches between each. Keep the center of the whole group at eye level. Paper templates taped to the wall let you plan the layout before making holes.

Renting or in a dorm?

Lightweight canvases can often be hung with removable hanging strips instead of nails. Check your rental or residence hall rules first.
